Z Is For… Zoo!

I love going to the zoo. They serve an important function in the conservation of these amazing animals.  Brookfield Zoo here in Chicago is no exception.  Much of their work, besides creating a fun zoo to wander, is in helping many different species of animals to survive and thrive.  In fact, each of the signs describing the animals has a meter that shows where it is on the scale of wild populations.  Many of the animals at Brookfield, sadly, are endangered in the wild.

When my husband and I visited recently, we lucked out: the pair of snow leopards had fallen asleep right next to the glass in the viewing area.  I got to sit on the ground, not two feet away from them, and study them for a full twenty minutes.

What about you, Dear Reader?
What’s your favorite animal to visit at the zoo?

  1. Awesome photos! The folks at Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida officially claim that zoos are not beneficial but I have to disagree. I guess they think zoos are why people became interested in breeding the large felines that they end up rescuing. Anyway, I’m still with you on that. If nothing else, zoos bring animals into peoples’ consciousness, especially in regards to endangerment. I think the nocturnal house at Cincinnati Zoo might be my favorite, but that’s probably cheating because that place has bats, cats, owls, and foxes, just to name a few. ~grin~ Oh, and I like the zoo gardens. On that note, my final post for the challenge at http://darlamsands.blogspot.com is about zinnias. I am number 1157 on the list now and can’t believe the month is ending. Happy writing, my friend.
