  • Varanids, Varanids Everywhere!

Until I did the A to Z of the Zoo Challenge for myself, I had no idea what a varanid was.  I\’d heard the term, of course; having a herper for a husband means that you\’ll have passing acquaintance with things like, well, herper, and varanid, and uromastix, and all sorts of other impossible Latinates that herpers use to converse about their favorite animals: herps.

    So what\’s a varanid?

Well, there\’s a journal specifically dedicated to varanids, otherwise known as monitor lizards.  Its address is interesting too, since it\’s http://www.varanidae.org/.  My husband tells me that one common factor among herps, or people who like reptiles and snakes, is that they have a wide vocabulary in Latin for the animals they love.  I\’ve seen this in action at a herpsoc meeting, or Chicago Herpetological Society, when a tattooed biker carried on a conversation with a PhD\’d biologist from the University of Chicago who\’d come to visit.

Okay, so.  Today\’s post is my Ode to Cold Medicine or, What To Show You When I Already Showed My Varanid Pics

This is my idea of a pet.  I can hug it, and love it, and call it George.  Or, in this case, Coyote.

    \"2016-04-26

Alternatively known as Snappy the Snarlmuffin and Big Dumazz.

She is not, however, at the zoo.  Nor, for that matter, a varanid.

    \"2016-04-26

This, however, is a varanid, and he\’s our friendly local Argus Monitor.  I found a picture of him from last year, so even if I\’ve already shown you his existence, you haven\’t seen this photo.  Take that, Dayquill.

    \"2016-04-26

This very excited peacock was displaying near one of the cafes.  They have a private area where they are fed and can hang out without being pestered by passers by.  In this case, though, he was being annoyed by a small boy of about twelve.

My husband studied this, and the adults all standing around watching the little boy edge closer and closer – despite signs all over the place asking parents not to allow their children to do this – and calmly said to me, \”You know, that\’s a threat display.\”

The mother promptly whisked her little boykin up and stalked away in a huff.

The peacock, on the other hand, was quite relieved.

    \"2016-04-26

While trying to find other monitor lizards for you, since today\’s post is about varanids, I found this lovely shot from last year.  Inne adorable!?

Oh fine, he\’s not a varanid.

    \"2016-04-26

THERE!  Happynow?  You can get an idea of the massive muscles involved in his tail, when you realize that the girth of his tail rivals that of his haunches.  They can use the tail as a weapon for defense, if needed.

    \"2016-04-26

Okay, one more.  Remember in my okapi post how I said I couldn\’t find my other okapi shots?  Well, I still can\’t; one of my zoo trips\’ photos are all jumbled up and out of order.  But I found this one and just had to share it with you because it\’s such an unusual animal.  This is the first time I\’d ever seen an okapi; I didn\’t even know what it was called.  I must have stood there a good five minutes without saying anything, just trying to figure out what the heck I was looking at.  A giraffezebra?  A zebraff?  A baby giraffe?  Can\’t be; wrong color.  Look at his ears!  Is it a he?  Are those horns?  His tongue is black!  Like a giraffe.  Maybe a weird hybrid giraffe thingie?

Like I said, Dear Reader.  Cold medicine.  It\’s what\’s for dinner.

  • Under Cover

    \"2016-04-25

    A. Catherine Noon here, with some thoughts on spies.  Under cover operatives are a common theme in romance novels.  Rightly so, in my view; they\’re fun to write and fun to read.  But it\’s even more fun to be one.

No, I\’m not about to confess I was a spy in another life.  But I have been a spy in order to write.

A popular writing exercise is to record snippets of conversations around us as they occur, like in a cafe or on a crowded train.  This helps us get better at writing dialog, because spoken language is a lot different than written language.  It\’s full of incomplete sentences, pauses and nonsense words, fillers, and grammatical mistakes.  But, like, if we, say, wrote the way, um, that we talked, it\’d be fuck of hard to read, don\’t you think?  (All the editors need to pretend they didn\’t just read that sentence.)

I once assigned this exercise at a crowded cafe for a prompt circle.  When I gave the prompt, I didn\’t realize that most of the tables around us had emptied, and there was just a deuce by the window with a father and son trying to enjoy a cup of coffee and some convivial conversation.  Having twelve adults staring at them, sneaking glances, and scribbling furiously probably put a damper on their father-son night out and they left before the prompt time was up.

    Oops.

Lesson learned.  If you\’re going to spy, you know, like, be discreet, will ya?

(And I shall now hide from all my grammar friends.)

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”

  • The Trouble with Tigers

    \"2016-04-23

The challenge with big cats is that they sleep twenty hours a day.  Take this fellow for instance, the Amur Tiger.  He\’s sleeping.

    A lot.

    \"2016-04-23

He\’s also not the most friendly beast on the planet.  One of our visits, the zookeeper told us that he bit off his daughter\’s tail and killed his son, so they\’re obviously never on display at the same time.  I can\’t see closely enough to tell if this is the papa with tail or the daughter without, and he didn\’t get up to wander around on our visit.

One amusing tidbit is that one visit while we were watching him, the tram went by.  The tram tours are narrated by the driver, and this particular driver had a heavy Southern accent.  He described this tiger as the \”Armor\” Tiger instead of Amur Tiger.

Sorry today\’s post is tardy (another T word – hey!), this cold is kicking my butt.  I hope to get back on track tomorrow.  Sleep well!

  • Been Waiting ALL Month For This!

    \"2016-04-22

And this, my Dear Reader, is Sarani, the queen snow leopard of the Brookfield Zoo.  Last year, she gave birth to two female cubs, Malaya and Daania.  I love watching these majestic animals, and the viewing glass lets me be near enough to practically touch them.

    \"2016-04-22

One of our visits in December, we found all three of them curled up on each other.  Sarani\’s resting her head on one of her daughters, which is exactly how my cats sleep at home.

And I was a little started to see I\’d taken over 100 shots of them on just one visit!  I picked my favorites for you today:

If you look closely and use your imagination, you can see the \”S\” in the fence links.

I had a heck of a time finding an S in a tree branch, and I have a cold, so I defaulted to my trusty fence.

T is much easier.  I found several possibilities, but you\’ll have to wait \’til tomorrow to see.

  • Six Inch Thick Skin

    \"2016-04-21

Many years ago, when I was just a lass, I met a wonderful woman who was a Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics.  She changed my life.  Her mascot, she said, was the rhinoceros, because their skin is six inches thick – and we all need thick skin when we build our dreams.

In researching for this post, I think that statement is apocryphal; most of the sources I found say between 1 and 5 cm (centimeters) thick, which is thinner than six inches but still quite strong.  Some people apparently believe it\’s actually bullet-proof, though I wouldn\’t want to test that theory.

As monitors go, this is a pretty large one.  The sobering thing to realize, is most of his head is mouth.  That jaw opens up for a good three inches or more and is all teeth.

    o.O…

In this one, you can get an idea of his size.  Monitors are about half body and half tail, and they can use their tails as defensive weapons.  This monitor is about five feet long, for example.  Most of them are captive-bread due to their diminishing population in the wild.

The most common kind of monitor, and one you might recognize, is the Komodo dragon; those get up to ten or fifteen feet long and weigh as much as three-hundred fifty pounds.  It\’s illegal to have them as pets and one must have direct permission from the government of Indonesia to own one or exhibit one in a zoo.  Chicago was privileged to have on on display at the Shedd Aquarium a couple years ago and we went with the Chicago Herpetological Society for a behind-the-scenes experience and to watch him get fed.

Any doubts you may have as to whether these animals are fast under the right circumstances were dispelled by watching him go after the food.  Scary stuff.

Tomorrow it\’s R.  Rrrrr.  RRRRRRrrrr.  rrrRRRRRRRR!

Thank you for joining me for the A-Z Blog Challenge.  If you’re blogging in the challenge, please leave me a link so I can come visit you too.  If you have a moment, please check out these other fine blogs:

My theme on my Knoontime Knitting craft blog is Letterforms In Nature and the Built Environment.  I’ll be exploring my daily round, looking for shapes in the natural world and build environment.

The theme at Noon & Wilder is The A To Z of Chicago.  Since I live here in the city and we have our Chicagoland Shifters based here, I figured I’d share a window into the city, Noon & Wilder style.

The Nice Girls Writing Naughty have a new home, and we’re blogging in the challenge again this year.  Throughout the month you’ll be hearing from each of the Nice Girls, and during the RT Booklovers Convention from April 12th to the 17th, you’ll be getting live convention reports.  Join the conversation!

The Writer Zen Garden’s brand new website is up and running, and we’re bringing you posts from me, Noony; my partner in crime, Rachel Wilder (the Wilder half of Noon & Wilder); the talented Darla M.
