A to Z Challenge, Day 5: E Is For Eggs!
Eggs! I love eggs. They’re one of my favorite foods; I could eat breakfast for breakfast, lunch, and dinner – do eat it for dinner on a fairly regular basis when I go out to eat, because it’s better for me than french fries. 🙂
Eggs in our house mean Pysanky, the Ukrainian art of decorating eggs. Thousands of years old, this art developed using very simple tools, wax, and dye – and the results are gorgeous! My foray into this art form is in the picture, above.
To see the masters at work, check out the Ukrainian Gift Shop up in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their artwork, and not just with eggs but embroidery and pottery too, is well worth a look-see. If you want to try it for yourself, they have books and instructional materials as well as supplies.
What about you?
Gorgeous! I noticed you did one for Noon and Wilder, too. Love it. I\’ve gotten into miniature gardening lately, perhaps itching to get outside and garden. ~grin~
Miniature gardening? Wow! I\’d love to see pics! If you do a blog post on it, let me know; I\’d love to see more.
Stunning eggs! Utterly beautiful artistry.
And, like you, I enjoy eating them in their various cooked forms. 🙂
Thank you! 🙂 I really enjoy making them. And eating them. 🙂 Happy blogging!
Those eggs certainly don\’t look like the work of a novice to me!
Oh, thank you! I\’m not a complete novice anymore, since I\’ve been doing it for a while, but when I look at the work of the masters I\’m inspired to keep at it. Some of the pysanka artists have been doing it for longer than I\’ve been alive and have very steady hands. Some of the work, too, is augmented with equipment like egg lathes and electric kistka with wax melters.
My friend Val from Canada paints eggs with beautiful, Ukrainian designs. It\’s not an easy process – especially getting the egg out of the shell so you can paint them. I\’ve enjoyed getting to know you and your blog through the A-Z challenge. Happy blogging – I\’ll be back! http://www.dianeweidenbenner.com
Yeah, I find trying to get them out of the shell difficult as well. Has she tried the egg blower? There\’s an inexpensive one at the Ukrainian Gift Shop; here\’s the link: http://www.ukrainiangiftshop.com/EGG-BLOWERS/products/36/ The Blas-Fix is from Germany so I assume they ship internationally; if not, ask them where to get supplies (they\’re a major US supplier for the art so if anyone would know where to find Canadian sources, I suspect it\’s them).
Thank you for stopping by! Happy blogging!
Haha, my E was for Eggs, too!
Those are gorgeous–I can barely manage the easy kind of Easter eggs, I don\’t even want to know what I\’d do if I tried pysanka…
Aww. You\’d have fun if you gave it a shot, I promise! 🙂 Just make a simple one. 🙂
Wow, your eggs are impressive, Catherine. Have never tried anything like that myself. I tend more towards cross-stitch and paper crafts.
Thanks, Heather! I really enjoy making them. 🙂
