  • Thursday 13: Thirteen Herbalism Terms Defined

    In the study of herbalism, I come across a number of terms that are both interesting and mystifying, since they\’re not things we use in everyday conversation. I thought I\’d share 13 with you – out of a list of quite a bit more than that! o.O… Never knew whatcha didn\’t know, huh? Me neither.

    So. Here we go:

    1. Abortifacient: A drug or other agent that induces the expulsion of a fetus.

    2. Alterative: An agent that produces gradual beneficial change in the body, usually by improving nutrition, without having any marked specific effect and without causing sensible evacuation.

    3. Analgesic: A drug that relieves or diminishes pain.

    4. Anaphrodesiac: An agent that reduces sexual desire or potency.

    5. Anesthetic: An agent that deadens sensation.

    6. Anthelmintic: An agent that destroys or expels intestinal worms; vermicide; vermifuge.

    7. Anthocyanins: Any of a class of soluble glycoside pigments that are responsible for most of the blue to red colors in leaves, flowers, and other plant parts.

    Bonus: Glycoside: Noun: A compound formed from a simple sugar and another compound by replacement of a hydroxyl group in the sugar molecule.

    8. Antibiotic: An agent that destroys or arrest the growth of micro-organisms.

    9. Anticoagulant: An agent that prevents clotting in a liquid, as in blood.

    10. Antiemetic: An agent that counteracts nausea and relieves vomiting.

    11. Antihydrotic: An agent that reduces or suppresses perspiration.

    12. Antiperiodic: An agent that counteracts periodic or intermittent diseases (such as malaria).

    13. Antipyretic: An agent that prevents or reduces fever.

  • A Bit of Baby…

    Wow, it\’s already October! Time passes so quickly, eh?

    I have been knitting, just not writing about it. Currently, I am working on holiday gifts and a very quick baby blanket for my husband\’s boss, to give to him tonight at his birthday party. He just had a baby (well, his wife did), and so I wanted to have the blanket done when I see him. JUST finished it today! ~pants~

    It\’s from a very easy pattern book by Jean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss called 7 Day Afghans called \”Raspberries and Cream.\” I varied the pattern a bit and used two slip stitches for the main color rather than one; I like the receding window pane effect as well as the loft of the resultant fabric.

    I don\’t have time to wash it before tonight, and it needs to be; while blocking isn\’t strictly necessary with the acrylic yarn I used it does need to be reshaped and washing will help that. It has a two-inch seed-stitch border around it which allows it to lay flat.

    In this image, you can see the back of the blanket and how the two-stitch carries along the back help it to be extra fluffy. It\’s a nice blanket to squish against and I think it will feel really nice against baby\’s skin.

  • Two New Posts

    I\’m blogging at Beyond the Veil this month on Classic Television and shows that I loved when I was younger. It was fun digging into my memory and examining what shows I used to like, because they inform what I like now.

    Then, over on Samhain Publishing\’s blog, I talk about \”When In Doubt, Knit\”. What kinds of things do you do when you are stalled for ideas, to get yourself going again?

    It\’s fun to write on group blogs, and I\’m pleased to be part of these two. It\’s a little awe-inspiring since I\’m around authors with a great deal more experience than me. I\’m grateful to be included with them.
