X Marks the Spot – Even If It’s Tardy!

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-29 The Letter X

I almost have my groove back!  It’s at about 65%.  I felt good enough to go to the gym yesterday and walk two miles, even if I did come home and pass out.  Then today I met with my kick-ass trainer, and he kicked my ass.

Sorta what I pay him for, but still.  My iz poopded!

BUT…  I wouldn’t leave you hanging, Dear Reader!  I got my last three alphabet photos on the way to the gym!  Above is what happens when X Marks the Spot – just ignore the litter.  (I hate it when people litter, don’t you?)

Water Dragon!

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-28 Pic 1

This, my friends, is an Australian Water Dragon!  Unfortunately, my two favorite shots of him are covered in glare from the glass in front of his enclosure, but this gives you a clear idea of what he looks like.  He’s about three feet long.

2016-04-28 Pic 2

Pretty impressive breath-holding skillz, nu?

2016-04-28 Pic 3

Hmm.  Watcha got there, human?

2016-04-28 Pic 4

He looks like he’s plotting something, doesn’t he? o.O…

I’m sort of on the mend from my cold, so with luck, my post will get up tomorrow sort of on time-ish.  😛  Watch, I’ll get all better, just in time for the end of the challenge.  Tomorrow it’s “Y,” and Saturday is “Z!”  Then it’s on to the wrap-posts where we get to share what we learned from the challenge.

But I’m jumping the gun.  For now, Dear Reader, Happy “X!” Or, wait a minute, I’m a day behind, aren’t I?  Happy “W!”

Weird Sky

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-27 The Letter W

I lucked out.  With my cold, I haven’t gotten out to take photographs for the last handful of letters I need.  I took this photo of the sky a few weeks ago when it was threatening to storm, and got a great shot of the sunset in the process.  And look!  There’s a W in the tree!

Score.  Totally meant to do that.

V! V-I! V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-26 The Letter V

The title of today’s post comes from the one-and-only cheer I remember from high school.  For some reason, any time I hear the letter “V,” that’s what I hear in my head.

I particularly like this shot of the tree because it’s an evergreen; in my mind, this is what trees “should” look and smell like.  As long as I’ve lived here in Chicago, I’ve never gotten quite used to the idea that deciduous trees drop all their leaves in winter, nor that dead leaves smell very different than a carpet of fallen needles.  There’s nothing quite like the tang of tannin.

Trivia tidbit for you:  in the winter, you can make a tea from evergreen needles and it is very high in Vitamin C and other things that help your immune system fight off colds.

And since I have a cold right now, I figured that was kinda relevant.  ‘N stuff.

Varanids, Varanids Everywhere!

A Catherine Noon

Until I did the A to Z of the Zoo Challenge for myself, I had no idea what a varanid was.  I’d heard the term, of course; having a herper for a husband means that you’ll have passing acquaintance with things like, well, herper, and varanid, and uromastix, and all sorts of other impossible Latinates that herpers use to converse about their favorite animals: herps.

So what’s a varanid?

Well, there’s a journal specifically dedicated to varanids, otherwise known as monitor lizards.  Its address is interesting too, since it’s http://www.varanidae.org/.  My husband tells me that one common factor among herps, or people who like reptiles and snakes, is that they have a wide vocabulary in Latin for the animals they love.  I’ve seen this in action at a herpsoc meeting, or Chicago Herpetological Society, when a tattooed biker carried on a conversation with a PhD’d biologist from the University of Chicago who’d come to visit.

Okay, so.  Today’s post is my Ode to Cold Medicine or, What To Show You When I Already Showed My Varanid Pics

This is my idea of a pet.  I can hug it, and love it, and call it George.  Or, in this case, Coyote.

2016-04-26 Pic 1

Alternatively known as Snappy the Snarlmuffin and Big Dumazz.

She is not, however, at the zoo.  Nor, for that matter, a varanid.

2016-04-26 Pic 2

This, however, is a varanid, and he’s our friendly local Argus Monitor.  I found a picture of him from last year, so even if I’ve already shown you his existence, you haven’t seen this photo.  Take that, Dayquill.

2016-04-26 Pic 3

This very excited peacock was displaying near one of the cafes.  They have a private area where they are fed and can hang out without being pestered by passers by.  In this case, though, he was being annoyed by a small boy of about twelve.

My husband studied this, and the adults all standing around watching the little boy edge closer and closer – despite signs all over the place asking parents not to allow their children to do this – and calmly said to me, “You know, that’s a threat display.”

The mother promptly whisked her little boykin up and stalked away in a huff.

The peacock, on the other hand, was quite relieved.

2016-04-26 Pic 4

While trying to find other monitor lizards for you, since today’s post is about varanids, I found this lovely shot from last year.  Inne adorable!?

Oh fine, he’s not a varanid.

2016-04-26 Pic 5

THERE!  Happynow?  You can get an idea of the massive muscles involved in his tail, when you realize that the girth of his tail rivals that of his haunches.  They can use the tail as a weapon for defense, if needed.

2016-04-26 Pic 7

Okay, one more.  Remember in my okapi post how I said I couldn’t find my other okapi shots?  Well, I still can’t; one of my zoo trips’ photos are all jumbled up and out of order.  But I found this one and just had to share it with you because it’s such an unusual animal.  This is the first time I’d ever seen an okapi; I didn’t even know what it was called.  I must have stood there a good five minutes without saying anything, just trying to figure out what the heck I was looking at.  A giraffezebra?  A zebraff?  A baby giraffe?  Can’t be; wrong color.  Look at his ears!  Is it a he?  Are those horns?  His tongue is black!  Like a giraffe.  Maybe a weird hybrid giraffe thingie?

Like I said, Dear Reader.  Cold medicine.  It’s what’s for dinner.

What Izzit!?

A Catherine Noon

Today It’s Uromastyx!

Uro-what?

Yeah, that’s what I said.

“Honey, I need a ‘U’ for my A to Z challenge.”

Husband:  “Hmm.  How about Uromastyx?”

Me:  “Huh?”

“You know, Uromastyx.  C’mon, I’ll show you!”

And so, Dear Reader, I shall show you the letter for today:

2016-04-25 ACN Pic 1

Cute little bugger, inne?  His other name is “Spiny-Tailed Lizard,” because he’s got a spiny tail.

2016-04-25 ACN Pic 2

Pugnacious stance, nu?

2016-04-25 ACN Pic 3

My husband, the reptile whisperer.  He put his hand down slowly to attract the attention of the lizard.

2016-04-25 ACN Pic 4

Of which there are two… o.O…

2016-04-25 ACN Pic 5

I took this one to show off his spiny tail; but look at the bottom right of the photo.  Sneaky!

Tomorrow it’s the letter V.  What in the heck shall I pick for V?

The Trouble with Tigers

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-23 Pic 1

The challenge with big cats is that they sleep twenty hours a day.  Take this fellow for instance, the Amur Tiger.  He’s sleeping.

A lot.

2016-04-23 Pic 2

He’s also not the most friendly beast on the planet.  One of our visits, the zookeeper told us that he bit off his daughter’s tail and killed his son, so they’re obviously never on display at the same time.  I can’t see closely enough to tell if this is the papa with tail or the daughter without, and he didn’t get up to wander around on our visit.

One amusing tidbit is that one visit while we were watching him, the tram went by.  The tram tours are narrated by the driver, and this particular driver had a heavy Southern accent.  He described this tiger as the “Armor” Tiger instead of Amur Tiger.

Sorry today’s post is tardy (another T word – hey!), this cold is kicking my butt.  I hope to get back on track tomorrow.  Sleep well!

2016-04-23 The Letter T

I like signs, and I’ve taken snaps of these little ones before.  They’ve always spoken to me because of their size and content.  Not sure why.

Losing a little momentum due to this cold of mine, so today’s post is late.  Tomorrow is the letter U, which is for…  well, you’ll have to wait and see!

Been Waiting ALL Month For This!

A Catherine Noon

2016-04-22 Pic 1

And this, my Dear Reader, is Sarani, the queen snow leopard of the Brookfield Zoo.  Last year, she gave birth to two female cubs, Malaya and Daania.  I love watching these majestic animals, and the viewing glass lets me be near enough to practically touch them.

2016-04-22 Pic 3

One of our visits in December, we found all three of them curled up on each other.  Sarani’s resting her head on one of her daughters, which is exactly how my cats sleep at home.

And I was a little started to see I’d taken over 100 shots of them on just one visit!  I picked my favorites for you today:

2016-04-22 Pic 4

Malaya and Daania wandering around, sniffing things.

My cats do this all the time.

2016-04-22 Pic 5

Busted!

Um…  I’ll just stand here and look at the… log!  I’ll look at the log, not the large predatory cat that just caught me spying…

2016-04-22 Pic 6

Look closely at this one.  The cub is curled up on TOP of Mamma’s tail. o.O…

2016-04-22 Pic 7

Hunting!  My cats do this exact same thing.  “What izzit?  Can I jump that high?  I wanna catch it.  I think I’ll catch it.  Is anybody watching me?  No?  Go!”

2016-04-22 Pic 8

“Wait…  I’d better check and see if I can climb up there first.”  …  “Nope.  Can’t climb that.  Is anybody watching?  Go!”

2016-04-22 Pic 9

Boing!

2016-04-22 Pic 10

Pounce!

Turns out, somebody was watching.

I meant to do that.

Uh-huh.

Cats.

🙂

Tomorrow, it’s T for pTerasaur!

No, of course not, those are extinct.  Must be a typo.  Now what did I pick for T? Hmm…
